Ingredients

  • 2 slices sturdy sandwich bread
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese optional
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Method

  1. Place the bread slices on a flat surface. Using the bottom of a drinking glass, press a wide indentation into the center of each slice. Do not press all the way through.
  2. Place the prepared bread in the air fryer basket. Carefully crack one egg into the indentation of each slice and season with salt and black pepper.
  3. Air fry at 330°F (165°C) for 5 minutes.
  4. If using cheese, sprinkle it over the eggs and continue cooking for another 2–4 minutes, depending on your preferred yolk consistency.
  5. For a runny yolk, aim for about 7 minutes total; for a soft, jammy yolk, cook for about 8 minutes; and for a firm yolk, cook for around 9 minutes.
  6. Carefully remove the toast from the air fryer and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Air fryers vary, so check the eggs during the final few minutes and adjust the cooking time if needed.
  • Make the indentation wide enough for the egg white to spread and cook evenly.
  • White, whole wheat, sourdough or multigrain bread can be used.
  • Cheddar can be replaced with mozzarella, Monterey Jack or another melting cheese.
  • Serve with hot sauce, chili flakes, green onions or fresh herbs if desired.
  • This recipe is best served immediately while the bread is crisp and the egg is warm.
